Ryan Stevens - Entrepreneurial Alertness Overview (501071689)

What’s New? What’s Changed Since Part 1?

One thing that I talked about in the first part of this assignment was that I wanted to work on improving my confidence when it comes to speaking in front of large groups. I’m a harsh critic when it comes to judging how well I’m progressing with something, so at first, my thoughts were that I hadn’t really done much to work on this. However, that isn’t totally true. While I haven’t been as vocal in this class’s lectures, I have started to speak up more in some of my other classes. I find it much easier, and I second guess myself much less when I’m confident in my knowledge of a subject, and naturally I find that I have much more confidence to speak up and voice my opinion in classes that are more related to my marketing major. So, while I haven’t seen a drastic change in this aspect of myself, I can say that I’m taking steps in the right direction to get where I want to be, which I should be happy about.

I mentioned in my previous individual assignment that something I should continue to do is keep exploring my personal interests and continue to develop myself as a well-rounded person. I think that exploring your own interests outside of what you’re studying formally is important when it comes to learning about yourself and finding what really makes you tick. I can safely say that I am continuing to progress as I had hoped in this regard. I am beginning to find a workflow that allows me to get the musical ideas I have out of my head and into my DAW and my understanding of musical theory has progressed well. I’m still at the point where I’ll start an idea, record a loop, begin to arrange a little bit, and then get bored and never finish a track. That is what I would like to work on next; actually taking an idea, building it out fully, arranging it how I see fit, mix it and get it to a stage where its listenable and ready for feedback from some of my musical friends. Overall, outside of the work I do for school, I am happy with how I’ve progressed in my hobbies in the time since I wrote my first individual assignment.

Course Journey

When I started this course, I had a little bit of previous experience with classes relating to entrepreneurship. I took one class at Sheridan where we learned about the process of starting a business. While that class did teach us how to do things like research costs and prepare elevator pitches for our idea, the class lacked any sort of mention of how to think like an entrepreneur, which I’ve learned through ENT601 is extremely important. This class has shown me that if one wants to have any chance of success with a new venture, being able to properly identify a problem that people have is one of the most important parts of the whole process, since if you come up with a solution for a problem nobody has, your idea is unfortunately not very sound.

What are My Next Steps?

Following this semester, I plan on continuing to use what I have learned in this class relating to identifying both problems and opportunities and use some of the techniques I have learned about in this class to figure out how I want to address the situations I face. I also plan on continuing to learn about new things outside of school and explore what I find myself interested in. I think that if I am learning new things, whether it be in school, while I’m working or just by myself in my free time, I will be happy. I’ve figured out over the years that this is something very important to me, and as long as I keep exploring what I’m interested in and continue to develop and improve myself as an individual, there is no limit to what I can accomplish!
