Legality

The rules and regulations of the sector that Splitzy operates within is governed by The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications (CRTC).

Through reading the CRTC website, they state "Part of our job is to set regulations and monitor Canadian radio and TV services to ensure they comply with their programming obligations.

On February 2, 2022, the Canadian government introduced the Online Streaming Act to update the Broadcasting Act. This new act means online streaming services fall under the Broadcasting Act and lets the CRTC place modern and flexible regulatory framework for broadcasting.

The Online Streaming Act only applies to the entities that broadcast through online streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ etc. That is, if they make money from broadcasting professional content. They could be required to pay a share of their revenue back into the system.

This would not effect Splitzy as we are not the streaming services broadcasting and creating the content. In fact, Splitzy only works with the payment aspect of the streaming services.

To further back this up, the CRTC even stated themselves "we do not permit programs designed for television to be offered exclusively by only one specific Internet service. This ensures that customers will not have to subscribe to more than one Internet service provider (ISP) or mobile provider to watch content.". What this shows is that the CRTC understands that consumers don't want to pay for an endless number of fees to have access to one thing they would like to watch. By implementing Splitzy, not only would this help the CRTC with their previous statement but it may also result in a reduction of illegal piracy as a result.
